Summary: All Dean wants is a puppy, really.
Notes: Found this quote: "The best way to get a puppy is to beg for a baby brother - and they'll settle for a puppy every time." It begged me to write, and so I did.

Dean heard from a kid at the playground that the best way to get a puppy is to ask for a little brother instead, so he figures he'll give it a shot. Because he really, really wants a puppy.

"Mommy?" His eyes are liquid, wide, and pleading.

Mary smiles down at her son, content to wait and let Dean ask for what he wants in his own time. She off handedly thinks that he inherited John's ability to look incredibly pathetic on command, and says a small prayer for anyone who might end up bearing the full brunt of that look when Dean gets older.

"Can I...can I have a little brother?"

Mary's eyes widen, and she laughs out loud, wondering where on earth that request came from.

"I can't make any promises, Dean, baby."

She smiles fondly when Dean's head sinks and he mutters "Oh.", and decides to strike a compromise with her son.

"I tell you what, kiddo," she says, ruffling his hair and noting that he's going to need another cut soon ('God, he got that from John too.'), "I'll talk to your daddy about it, and maybe together we can convince him it's a good idea, okay?"

Dean's little frame shakes from the force he puts into nodding his head.

'Yes! I'm gonna get a puppy!'

Nine months later, Dean is peeking over the side of a crib, thinking,

'That don't look like any puppy I've ever seen.'

Twenty-two years pass, and Dean is dragging an unconscious Sam out of a collapsing, abandoned, out in the middle of bumfuck nowhere farmhouse, thinking,

'Goddamnit, Mom, Dad! All I wanted was a fucking dog!'

Two hours after that, Sam is slowly sucking out Dean's soul though his dick and Dean thinks,

'Okay...maybe the 'rents knew what they were doing.'
